His Royal Highness the Duke of York was introduced to Jeremy Manuel and Susan Lewis of the Gauchers Association and Dr Atul Mehta and specialist nurse Linda Richfield who run the Gaucher Clinic at the Royal Free Hospital at a lunch organised by the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in London on 9 May 2000. Susan Sackier represented the patients treated at the Gaucher Clinic at the Royal Free.

Several charities, which have affiliations with the Royal Free Hospital, gathered in the William Wells Atrium of the Hospital to hear the Duke of York, who is Patron of the Trust, stress the importance to the Hospital of the contribution made by voluntary charities. The Duke had earlier been shown around the hospital to see refurbished wards and a new staff recreation centre. He also inspected new ultrasound equipment.

The Duke of York spoke to the group representing Gauchers disease for several minutes asking what it was and how many people suffered from it. Dr Mehta explained there is a treatment available and how the hospital's Finance Department obtains funding from the local authorities. Dr Mehta introduced Norma Rees who is responsible for negotiating funding for treatment. n
