Anne Begg MP hosted a Reception at the House of Commons to celebrate the publication of the most up to date medical text book on Gauchers disease. Secretary of State for Health, Frank Dobson MP, was one of 90 guests who crowded into the Jubilee Room on Thursday evening 22 January 1998. Professor Ari Zimran, who edited the new book 'Gaucher's Disease', which is part of Bailliere's Clinical Haematology series, was welcomed by Anne Begg who, in her address, made it clear she does not like to be referred to as a sufferer: 'I hate the word. I do not suffer from the disease, I live with it. I have learnt to live with it and I live a very full life.'

Recalling when she was first diagnosed with Gauchers disease 34 years ago, she said that neither her parents nor the doctors treating her, had any knowledge of the disease.

Anne praised the new book as being a major contributor to raising the profile and understanding of the disease, and she welcomed to the reception experts from Britain, Israel, Holland and the United States who had contributed to new knowledge of and treatment for Gauchers disease.

I desperately wish it had all been possible when I was growing up. The only thing my parents could tell me was that it was an inborn error of metabolism and at aged eight, that did not mean an awful lot to me,' she added.
