Dr Pram Mistry was nominated Physician of the Year by the Genetic Disease Foundation at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre whilst Mr Henri Termeer, Chief Executive Officer of the Genzyme Corporation was presented with its Humanitarian of the Year Award, at a Gala Benefit Dinner Dance on 9 February 2000.

The Genetic Disease Foundation at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre, New York, supports research and education to prevent and cure genetic diseases and birth defects. Their Gala Benefit Dinner Dance on 9 February was a great success when 1,000 tickets were sold ranging from $225 to $1,000.

In honouring Dr Mistry as Physician of the Year, the Foundation amplifies the feelings of Gauchers patients in the UK and many parts of Europe who have benefited from his unbounded kindness and exceptional abilities,' writes Jeremy Manuel.

'Henri Termeer had the foresight to take up research into enzyme replac-ement therapy for Gauchers disease and develop it into a treatment for sufferers. Without such commitment and determination, we may never have had Ceredase and then Cerezyme which undoubtedly have improved and indeed saved the lives of many Gauchers sufferers.'
