A medical paper on the results of enzyme infusion therapy of the Norrbottnian (Type 3) form of Gauchers disease, has been sent to us by Bo Johansson, Chairman of the Swedish patient organisation - Morbus Gaucher - Foreningen.


An abstract from the paper by Dr A Erikson and his colleagues says: 'We report our experience from enzyme infusion therapy of eight patients with the Norrbottnian type of Gauchers disease, age 4 to 42 years. All patients responded with increased well-being, decreased liver and spleen size and normalized haematological parameters. The children caught up in growth. No further neurological deterioration occurred and there were some indications of neurological improvement.'

Juvenile Gauchers Disease

Sometimes called Juvenile Gauchers disease, the symptoms are similar to Type 1 but are accompanied with a varying degree of neurological symptoms. The highest incidence of Type 3 Gauchers disease has been reported from the northern part of Sweden (the Norrbottnian type).
